This ugly sweater craft is perfect for preschoolers, kindergartners, and older children. Adult supervision is always recommended.
I enjoy this craft because it’s quick and engaging for kids. It allows them to practice decision-making by decorating their sweater and choosing the right character, while the cutting and gluing activities help develop their fine motor skills.

Tools & Materials
- Printer
- Template (download at the end of the article; you don’t need to subscribe!)
- Glue
- White cardstock
- Black fine point marker
- Chalk Markers*
- Q-Tips® and vibrant paint (optional)
- Twine (optional)

If you don’t have chalk markers, you can easily recreate the same effects with regular paint and Q-Tips®. Simply dab the cotton swab on the paint and do little dots on the sweater.
You can opt to print a patterned sweater as well.
Step 1 – Print Ugly Sweater Template
You’ll find a section with the templates at the end of the tutorial. There’s a pre-colored version and a version for coloring. For a faster and easier craft, print the colored version, and for a longer activity, choose the one for coloring.
Before you print the template, take a look at the pages. There are different types of sweaters. Green, red, blue, with patterns or blanks for you to take this craft as far as you want to.
Step 2 – Cut Template
Cut all the pieces you want to use. As I mentioned, there are many different sweaters. You can also check out the “Assemble Ideas!” page or show your children which sweaters they want to make.
Step 2 – Decorate
For this step-by-step tutorial, I decided to use a red blank sweater.
With a black fine point marker, I added some sort of “string Christmas lights,” and with my chalk markers, I painted some lightbulbs.
Once you decorate your blank sweater, glue your favorite Christmas character.
I chose the gingerbread man!
Step 3 – Make it into a Christmas Ornament
You can turn this craft into a Christmas ornament and hang it on your tree as well! Simply make a loop with twine and tape it to the back of the sweater.
Doesn’t it look lovely?
More Ugly Sweater Ideas!
Here are more ideas you can show your little ones as well.
Whenever possible, I like to provide you with different crafting choices. This allows you to include your little one in the decision-making.
Look at the following sweater combinations!
I used my marker to make extra dots and lines to add life to my sweaters.
Nonetheless, you can play around with them. These sweaters would look great with small beads, stickers, glitter, etc. Ask your children what they envision as well!
It’s hard to pick a favorite!
Don’t you think?
I love the sweaters with the Christmas tree and the Christmas truck!
